WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The women's soccer team (1-2) fell to American University (3-1) 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Senior Kelsey Rdzanek and freshman Natalie LeClair led Richmond with three shots apiece.
American netted the lone goal of the game 14 minutes into the first half when Mikala Weaver scored unassisted from short range off a rebound shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Pacheco collected five saves in her first start of the season.
"It was a frustrating game," said head coach Melissa Pacheco had a solid game in goal. We are looking for a strong showing this weekend at the Longwood Tournament."
The Spiders outshot the Eagles, 12-11 with Rdzanek and LeClair leading Richmond with three shots each. Freshman LeighAnne Baxter followed with two shots.
The Spiders travel to Farmville, Va. this weekend to participate in the Longwood Tournament. Richmond opens the tournament Friday against Charleston Southern at 5 p.m. The Spiders follow with a Sunday match versus Coastal Carolina at noon.
