RICHMOND, Va. -
The Richmond women's soccer team fell to Eastern Michigan, 1-0 Friday afternoon at Sports Backers Stadium in the first game of the VCU Invitational. Freshman LeighAnne Baxter led Richmond with four shots.
The only goal of the game was scored with 13 minutes remaining in the first half after a Kelsey Rdzanek yellow card. Eastern Michigan's Paige Sherdian took a shot 20 yards out that was blocked by sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Young. Three Eastern Michigan players then sped towards the goal with Ashley Rodrigues connecting on the rebounding shot.
"I'm disappointed in our first half effort," said head coach Peter Albright. "But we carried the play in the second half of the game. "
After being outshot 12-5 in the first frame, the Spiders surged back in the second half, outshooting the Eagles by a 8-5 margin. Numerous Richmond attempts to tie the game fell short, as the Eagles' defense kept fending off the persistent play of forwards Shondel Archer and Baxter.
The Spiders square-off against cross-town rival VCU Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the final game of the VCU Invitational.
