RICHMOND, Va. -
The Richmond women's soccer team battled cross-town rival VCU to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes in the final game of the VCU Invitational Sunday afternoon at Sports Backers Stadium. Senior Jen Ruhe and freshmen Shondel Archer and Emily Parisi earned spots on the All-Tournament team.
"That was a great game of collegiate soccer," said head coach Peter Albright. "I'm proud of our determination and fighting spirit. That's the best we've played in awhile."
Both teams had ample opportunities to score in regulation. Numerous cross attempts from sophomore Emily Dale to Archer were thwarted by the Rams' back line.
"We faced a very good VCU team today," said Albright. "I was impressed with Melissa Pacheco's performance in goal, as well as the play of Ruhe and Parisi."
Pacheco, making her second start of the season, played all 110 minutes and collected a game-high eight saves in goal.
Seven Spiders recorded a shot, with Archer and senior forward Kelsey Rdzanek leading the charge with two shots apiece.
"We had great ball movement and key possessions," said Albright. "We know what we have to do in close games. It's up to our captains to focus in on that with good effort and determination."
Richmond opens a three-game home slate with Davidson Friday night at Ukrop Park. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
