UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Freshman Shondel Archer scored early in the first frame, and junior Kristy Schmitt netted her first collegiate goal as Richmond (4-4-1) downed Longwood (5-3) 2-0 Sunday night at Ukrop Park.
Archer scored 12 minutes into the game after a cross pass from senior Kristen Stalter. Archer chipped the ball into the center left side of the goal past the outstretched hands of Longwood goalkeeper Kyra Byron to give the Spiders the 1-0 advantage. Archer has scored four goals in the past five games, and leads Richmond with six tallies on the year.
"You have to give Longwood credit," said head coach Peter Albright. "They came out and fought hard as any team we've faced this season. We had two great goals and got great play from goalkeeper Andrea Young."
Longwood notched 13 shots in the second half, and kept the Spiders' back line busy by keeping the ball deep in Richmond territory.
"We've shown we can play with resiliency," said Albright. "We're good at dealing with pressure. We got great contribution from Kristy Schmitt and solid performances from our back line as well."
Schmitt scored off a Kelsey Rdzanek assist in the 85th minute to seal the win for the Spiders. Schmitt broke free from two Lancer defenders to bury the goal in the left side of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Young collected a game-high nine saves.
Richmond opens conference play Friday night against Fordham at Ukrop Park. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
