Quick Slants:
No. 1 Richmond is back home Saturday, hosting VMI at UR Stadium in the 86th all-time meeting between Commonwealth rivals.
The Spiders have won a school-record 12-consecutive games, dating back to last season. A streak that ranks as the longest in the FCS and second-longest in Division I football behind Florida (13).
For the second year in a row, Richmond's Mike London will join thousands of football coaches nationwide to raise awareness and research funding for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the most prolific genetic killer diagnosed in childhood. This Saturday London will wear a "Coach to Cure MD" logo patch on the sideline. Fans may donate to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research online at www.CoachtoCureMD.org.
Throughout the 2009 season, the Spiders will celebrate "The Final Season" of historic UR Stadium. After 81 years off-campus, the team is set to move into a new, $25-million on-campus stadium in 2010. Just three regular-season games remain after Saturday.
Junior WR Kevin Grayson was named to the AFCA Good Works Team, which was announced Tuesday. He joins Florida's Tim Tebow and 21 others college players nationwide to be honored.
Richmond turned four first-half turnovers into 24 points and rolled past Hofstra, 47-0, last Saturday at the Stadium. Senior QB Eric Ward tied his career high with four TD passes. Ward is 33-10 as Richmond's starting QB.
Senior DE Nicholas Battle was tabbed the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week after forcing two fumbles, recovering another and making a career-high 2.5 TFL.
Eric Ward needs just five more TD passes to break the school's career record, while junior Justin Rogers is 40 yards shy of the school's career kickoff return record.
Thanks to 47 points last week, Richmond has scored 31 points or more in 13 consecutive home games (12-1) and are winning by an average margin of 23.4 points in that stretch.
Although the all-time series with VMI is tied at 40-40-5, Richmond has won seven straight.

The Spiders are off next week, before traveling to James Madison Oct. 10.
