WILLIAMBSURG, Va. - Sophomore Katelin Peterson scored two goals and junior Dani Pycroft added another as the Richmond field hockey team defeated William & Mary 3-1 Wednesday at Busch Field.
Peterson, who had scored three goals in Richmond's 7-0 win over Monmouth on Saturday, tallied her fifth goal of the season just 12:14 into the match when senior Megan Thompson took a sot from the left and Peterson tipped it inside the right post for her 16th career goal.
Pycroft made it 2-0 eight minutes later when, after inserting a penalty corner, she deflected a shot by Sarah Blythe-Wood into the cage. It was Pycroft's fourth goal of the season and the 12th goal of her career.
The 2-0 lead lasted through the half and with 15:18 remaining in the game, Peterson got out on a breakaway and scored her sixth goal of the season.
William & Mary avoided the shutout with 3:31 to play when the Tribe were awarded a penalty stroke and Wesley Drew converted it.
The Spiders out-shot William & Mary 15-11, including 9-4 in the first half. Richmond goalkeeper Jackie Raithel made eight saves for Richmond (4-5).
This was the Spiders only road contest in a nine-game stretch. Richmond returns home to face nationally ranked Virginia next Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
