UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Darrius Garrett blocked the second most shots in a NCAA Division I game, swatting 14 in Richmond's 70-63 overtime win over Massachusetts Wednesday.
Garrett set the Atlantic 10 record and school record with 14 blocks and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, just missing Richmond's first-ever triple-double with eight points.
His 14 blocks were the second most in NCAA Division history, behind Alabama A&M's MIckell Gladness, who swatted 16 against Texas Southern on Feb. 24, 2007. Garrett is tied with four other players for second on the NCAA all-time single-game list, joining David Robinson (Navy vs. UNC-Wilmington), Shawn Bradley (BYU vs. Eastern Kentucky), Roy Rogers (Alabama vs. Georgia) and Loren Woods (Arizona vs. Oregon).
Richmond (13-5, 2-1 A10) set a school record with 17 blocked shots, which is the third most blocks in Atlantic 10 history. The Marcus Camby led Minutemen had 20 blocks in 1995 against West Virginia and the Stephen Lasme led Minutemen had 18 against Central Connecticut in 2007.
The previous Atlantic 10 individual single-game record for blocks was 12 by Duquesne's Shawn James on Nov. 20, 2007 against Oakland. The previous Richmond individual record for blocks was 10 by Tim Faulconer against Liberty on Dec. 7, 1999 and the previous Richmond team record for blocks was 13 against American on Feb. 21, 2001.
The 6-foot-9 Garrett has 44 blocks on the season, which ranks eighth on Richmond's single-season list.
Richmond junior Justin Harper also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. It was the first time two Spiders had double-doubles in the same game since Dec. 1, 2001.
Junior Kevin Anderson led the Spiders with 19 points, while senior David Gonzalvez made three three-pointers on his way to 16 points.
Gonzalvez opened overtime with a three-pointer and after Garrett broke the record with his 11th block, Anderson made a pull-up jumper to open up a 58-53 lead and the Spiders went on to outscore UMass 17-10 in the extra session.
