Women's Basketball Looks For Fifth Straight Win At UMass

Richmond (12-4, 1-0) travels to Massachusetts (6-10, 0-1) Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip at the Mullins Memorial Center. The Spiders look for their fifth win a row and fourth straight over the Minutewomen.
Of Note:
The Spiders moved to 6-3 in A-10 openers, 4-1 under head coach Michael Shafer and 3-2 when opening conference play at home.
Richmond is coming off a 65-52 win over La Salle in both teams' conference opener. The Spiders were again led by junior Brittani Shells, who notched a game-high 23 points.
The Spiders play three of their next four on the road. After Saturday's game, Richmond hosts GW Tuesday before traveling to Dayton and Charlotte.
Shells' game-high 23 points marked her third straight game-high performance and ninth game-best performance overall.
Shells was one of 12 women's basketball players nominated to the 2010 Players Making the Buzz list for the Nancy Lieberman Award. The annual award recognizes the nation's top point guard in Division I women's basketball. The criteria for the award is floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman during her career.
The Series:
Richmond are winners of four straight and six of the last seven.
Richmond owns an 8-2 edge in the series with the Minutewomen, with the last win coming Jan. 24, 2009 at the Robins Center. Sam Bilney was one assist shy of a triple-double.
The Spiders hold a 3-1 mark in the Mullins Memorial Center.
Richmond and UMass have twice met at neutral sites, with the Minutewomen taking the first victory at the Terrapin Classic in 1998, while the Spiders recorded the most recent win at the A-10 Tournament in 2002.
