Spiders Coast Past Rival GW To Sixth Straight Win, 76-47

Richmond (14-4, 3-0) extended its Atlantic 10-leading, six-game win streak with a convincing rout over visiting GW (3-13, 0-4) 76-47 Tuesday night at the Robins Center.
"It was obvious we passed the basketball well tonight," said head coach Michael Shafer. Our assists [season-high 24] showed how we have developed chemistry as a team. We are finding the open man and making smart decisions."
The 24 assists was a season-high for the Spiders, and just four assists from tying a school record. (28 assists vs. UNC Wilimington, 2/10/86).
Richmond jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start the game, with sophomore Joyous Tharrington continuing her stellar play from Saturday's contest with six straight points.
After taking a 16-8 advantage, the Colonials scored two quick jumpers to get within a four-point deficit. Richmond quickly responded with a 9-0 run to take a 25-12 lead at the 8:29 mark.
The Spiders continued to build on their momentum by going on a 21-6 run the last 10:12 minutes of the half. In this span, the Colonials were held without a basket for more than seven minutes.
Richmond notched another flawless first-half performance, shooting an even 50 percent from the field (17-for-34) while dishing 12 assists.
The Spiders continued their dominance into the second half, taking their largest lead at 71-38 with 3:30 remaining.
"There's no question a lot of categories speak volumes as to how we played tonight," said Shafer. I'm really proud how we came out tonight and competed. We definitely have GW circled on our calendar, and we feel fortunate to have recorded our third straight win over a rival. The way we played tonight was really special."
Richmond owned every statistical category and notched season-high performances in points in the paint (42), points off turnovers (23), fast break points (24) and bench points (36).
Junior Katie Holzer chipped in with 10 points.
Kara Powell dished a game-high and season-best seven assists. Richmond recorded 14 steals.
The Spiders play at Dayton Saturday for a pivotal Atlantic 10 contest. Tip is slated for 2:00 p.m.
