Richmond Hires Erika Matheis As Interim Diving Coach

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - University of Richmond swimming and diving head coach Matt Barany has announced the hiring of Erika Matheis as the interim diving coach. Matheis served as the head diving coach at Radford last season and graduated from North Carolina in 2008 after a standout career.
"We sought Erika out as our interim coach and she comes highly recommended as a qualified athlete and coach," said Barany. "But it was the positive recommendations of her character that excited us the most. We look to Erika to be an outstanding model for the divers in the classroom and on the boards as she was an outstanding student and diver at UNC. We look forward to having her honesty, hard work, and energy on our staff and in the recruiting arena."
Matheis possess seven years of experience as a club diving coach in her hometown of Webster, N.Y., in Chapel Hill, N.C. and in Blacksburg, Va. Last season, she served as the head diving coach at Radford University.
"I am honored to have been considered for this position and excited about the opportunity to give back to the diving community," said Matheis. "I am fortunate that a program as prestigious as the University of Richmond's has given me the opportunity to improve upon its established swimming and diving reputation. I am looking forward to working with the current athletes and the fine coaching staff of Danielle Hulick, who have a deep respect for the sport of diving."
As an athlete, she won a New York State championship then attended UNC where she reached the finals at the ACC Championship and qualified for NCAA Zone Diving meet. Matheis has also competed at Senior Nationals. She was a four-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels and earned multiple mentions on the ACC All-Academic team.
Matheis graduated with a degree in exercise and sports science.
