PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Senior David Gonzalvez made five three-pointers on his way to moving into 10th on Richmond's all-time scoring list as Richmond defeated Duquesne 80-68 in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams Wednesday night.
The Spiders (12-4, 1-0 Atlantic 10) continued their best start in 22 years by improving to 5-0 in their first conference road game under Chris Mooney. Richmond, which was an Atlantic 10 best 5-3 on the road in conference play last season, improved to 10-7 in Atlantic 10 road games over the last three seasons.
The Spiders led by as many as 14 in the final minutes as they won their 13th-straight game against Duquesne (9-6, 0-1 A10). The Dukes had been undefeated at the Palumbo Center this season and still have not defeated the Spiders since Richmond joined the league in the 2001-02 season.
The Spiders picked up their sixth win against a team that played in the postseason last March and have five wins against Top-100 RPI teams this season after winning at Duquesne, who was 89th in the RPI. Richmond has won eight of its last 11 with only three of those games at home. The Spiders finish a four-game road swing on Saturday when they play at Saint Louis (9-5).
Gonzalvez made 5-of-8 three pointers and 6-of-12 field goals to finish with a game-high 19 points. That moved him past Walt Lysight (1,425) and Kenny Wood (1,427) and into 10th on Richmond's all-time scoring list with 1,429 points. The Marietta, Ga. native has 195 career three-pointers, which ranks fourth on Richmond's all-time list, 25 behind Mike Skrocki for third.
Junior guard Kevin Anderson scored 18 points to pass Eric Poole (1,221) for 21st on Richmond's all-time scoring list.
Richmond shot 13-of-26 from behind the three-point arc, connecting on double-figure three-pointers for the third time this season.
The Spiders put five players in double-figures for the third time this season. Senior Ryan Butler, playing in front of a large contingent of relatives from the Pittsburgh area, connected on 3-of-7 three-pointers and 5-10 field goals to finish with 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior Justin Harper just missed a double-double with 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Junior Dan Geriot had 11 points, making 5-of-7 field goals and dishing out three assists.
Richmond trailed by three at the half and by five minutes into the second half, but the Spiders took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Gonzalvez with 12:29 left and after back-to-back three-pointers by Butler, Richmond pushed the lead to double-figures on a three-pointer by Anderson with 5:59 left.
