Men's Basketball Stopped At Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Richmond came to St. Louis as one of only four teams to win in Chaifetz Arena and the Spiders came close to become the first visiting team to win twice in the 2-year-old venue, before falling 63-58 Saturday afternoon.
The Spiders (12-5, 1-1 Atlantic 10) were tied with the Billikens (10-5, 1-0) at 58 with under a minute to play, but Saint Louis would make 5-of-7 free throws in the final 39 seconds.
Saint Louis freshman Cody Ellis was fouled on a three-point attempt and made 2-of-3 free throws to put the Billikens up for good as they improved to 24-4 at Chaifetz Arena.
Richmond senior David Gonzalvez and junior Kevin Anderson (4 assists) each had 13 points for the Spiders. Senior Ryan Butler had eight points and six boards and junior Dan Geriot had eight points and five rebounds.
Sophomore Darrius Garrett scored six points, grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and had two blocks and two steals.
Kwamain Mitchell scored 16 points to lead Saint Louis. Brian Conklin scored all 12 of his points in the first half and Ellis had 10 points in his debut.
The Spiders entered the game holding teams to 37.6 percent shooting, but Saint Louis shot 51.2 percent against the Spiders. Richmond out-rebounded the Billikens 37-28 and outscored them in the paint 30-24.
Richmond finished a tough stretch of playing nine of 12 games away from home with an 8-4 record. The Spiders return home for three-straight and four of the next five, beginning with a visit from Massachusetts on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
