Spiders Win Richmond Intercollegiate; Beach Finishes Second

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - Senior Sam Beach finished second to lead the Richmond men's golf team to victory at the Richmond Intercollegiate, played Monday and Tuesday at Independence Golf Club.
Richmond finished at 9-under-par 855 in winning its 17th tournament team title, including the fourth in six seasons under head coach Adam Decker.
The Spiders shot a 5-under-par 283 in Monday's opening round, followed by a 9-under 279 in the second round which was the second-lowest round in school history. Richmond shot a 5-over 293 in Tuesday's final round to finish four shots ahead of James Madison in the 11-team field.
Radford finished fourth, Georgetown took fifth, George Mason was sixth and George Washington was seventh.
Beach finished second at 5-under-par 211, two shots behind individual champion Ian McConnell from Liberty. Beach shot a 3-under 69 in the first round, and 1-under 71s in the final two rounds to post his second-best finish as a collegian and his fifth top-10 finish in the last two seasons.
Richmond senior Michael Shrader tied for third at 4-under-par 212. Shrader followed an opening round 75 with a 5-under 67 in the second round, tied for fourth lowest round to par in school history. He finished with a 2-under-par 70 in Tuesday's final round as he matched his best collegiate finish and notched his fifth top-10 finish, including second this fall.
Richmond sophomore Nick Austin had the lead entering Tuesday's final round after carding the second-lowest round in school history, 6-under 66 in the opening round Monday. He followed that with a 1-under 71 in the second round to maintain a hold on the lead. A 79 on Tuesday took him out of contention, but Austin still finished tied for 11th at even-par 216.
Sophomore Daniel Walker tied for 20th at 3-over 219 (76-70-73) and junior Brad Miller tied for 29th at 223 (73-71-79).
Playing as individuals, junior Jack Lessing and freshman Jack Wilkes tied for 51st at 228.
The Spiders return to action at the Georgetown Invitational Oct. 18-19 in Beallesville, Md.
