NORFOLK, Va. -
The Richmond women's tennis team posted a 6-0 record in the first day of competition in the ITA Women's Atlantic Regional Tournament in Norfolk, Va.
"I am very happy with the way we're playing," said head coach Mark Wesselink. We drew the best competition in the tournament. We went 6-0 yesterday which shows what kind of tennis we're playing right now. Hopefully we can continue this throughout the tournament."
The Spiders posted four wins in the singles column and two in doubles action. Joanna Matuszczyk downed Julia Blakeley 6-0, 6-1 and Melissa Esnal 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Elizabeth Sims had two big wins, with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Sydney Smith and a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Yana Mavrina. Sims also has a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brittany Morgan.
"Elizabeth's strong work ethic and smart playing earned her a lot of respect from the coaches and competition this fall," said Wesselink. "Elizabeth is fun to coach because she has so many weapons and is willng to take some risks. We expect her to make a big contribution to our program this spring."
The doubles tandem of Sims and Kelly Tidwell picked up a win over Corba/Pascarella 9-8(5) while Sydney Grant and Matuszczyk defeated Andriescu/Pate, 9-7.
