UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
After a scoreless first half, Richmond exploded for four goals in the final frame to dominate Duquesne, 4-0, Friday night at Ukrop Park. Becca Wann led the Spiders with two tallies.
Richmond found ample opportunities to score in the first half, but could never connect on a foot near the goal. The Spiders outshot the Dukes by an 11-8 count and controlled the tempo throughout.
After being outshot 4-0 early in the second half, the Spiders found their groove and notched six consecutive shots to warm up the Richmond offense.
The first tally came in the 70th minute after a nicely placed cross pass from Emily Dale found Jensen Smith's foot to flick in a score at close range.
Fourteen minutes later, the always aggressive Wann took another Dale feed and went one-on-one with the keeper and scored after a shot went into the lower left side of the goal.
Wann decided she wasn't done, and scored two minutes later after a pass from Sarah Scheurich was placed in firing range and nailed the crossbar. The persistent Wann headed in the rebound for her ninth goal of the season.
The Spiders' last tally came in the game's last 30 seconds after a Duquesne red card found Kristen Schmitt taking the penalty shot. Schmitt buried the goal in the upper right of the net.
The four goals scored was the Spiders' most goal production since 2007. Richmond outshot the Dukes, 20-16 and outcornered the opposition, 8-3.
With the team-high eight shots recorded in tonight's game, Wann cracked Richmond's top-5 list for shots in a single season with 66.
Melissa Pacheco had eight saves in the net.
Richmond wraps up its regular season with St. Bonaventure Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ukrop Park.
