Shells Moves To Fifth All-Time Scorer, But Spiders Fall At ETSU

Four Spiders recorded double figures, with Brittani Shells leading with a team-high 25 points, but Richmond (1-1) fell to East Tennessee State (2-0) 96-84 Sunday afternoon.
Shells has started her sendoff season with a bang, with a career-best 34 points at Western Carolina followed by today's 25 point performance. Shells surpassed Julie Jones for fifth place all-time and now stands with 1,526 points.
Richmond fell into trouble early, going down 16-6 just seven minutes into the game. After the two teams traded baskets, the Spiders scored five consecutive points to put the game back at 24-20 after a Goring lay-up with six minutes remaining in the first frame.
ETSU came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, pushing the tempo and boosting its lead to 55-36 after a 15-4 run with 14 minutes left. Richmond began to mount a comeback through the combination of Shells and Crystal Goring, outscoring the Bucs 16-4 over the next four minutes to get within 59-52 at the 10 minute mark.
The Bucs responded in a big way with another crucial scoring spree -- this time a 16-4 scoring onslaught that put the game out of reach 75-56 at the 6:23 mark.
Following Shells was Kristina Puthoff-King added 13 apiece.
Both teams had 15 assists and the Spiders recorded a game-high 13 steals, highlighted by the four swipes by Shells and King. Goring led Richmond rebounding with eight boards.
The Bucs went to the line 34 times, with East Tennessee State's Tara Davis knocking down 14-of-14 attempts.
Today's game was the first in the series.
Richmond hosts Appalachian State in its home opener Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Robins Center.
