UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Brittani Shells grabbed the league's first A-10 Player of the Week honor this season after pouring in a career-high 34 points in the Spiders' season-opening win over Western Carolina Friday. Shells followed her dazzling performance with another gem, a 25-point outing on Sunday against East Tennessee State.
Shells, the A-10's top returning scorer, scored a career-best 34 points, went 10-for-19 from the field, 4-of-8 from long range and matched a career-best going 10-of-11 at the free throw line, while also recording three steals against Western Carolina in the Spiders' season opener. Shells then scored a team-high 25 points in a loss at defending Atlantic Sun champion East Tennessee State on Nov. 14. With her 25 points against ETSU, Shells moved into fifth place on Richmond's all-time scoring list with 1,526 points.
The Camden, Del., native finished the week averaging 29.5 points, shooting an impressive 49 percent (21-43) from the field and 39 percent (5-13) from beyond the arc. She also added seven steals, three assists and one block. Shells was a preseason All Conference defensive team and second team selection.
This is the second Player of the Week nod as Shells previously received the honor after notching a then career-best 32 points against Morgan State last December.
The Spiders host Appalachian State Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Robins Center in their home opener.
