HAMPTON, Va. -
Richmond's balanced scoring attack was too much for Hampton, 71-43, Tuesday night at the Hampton Convocation Center. The Spiders had 10 players record points in the scoring column with Brittani Shells leading the pack with 15.
Every player saw minutes and seven Spiders had five points or more. Shells has four high performances in the first five games. Kara Powell was almost flawless from the field, going 5-for-8 in field goals and 2-for-4 from long range.
Richmond was clearly the quicker team and helped their own cause with another hot start. The Spiders made 3-of-4 from long range and were 10 for their first 16 from the field.
Nine Spiders had points in the first frame, with seven of those recording five or more. Richmond shot 59 percent from the field in the first half and outscored Hampton's bench a staggering 18-4.
Richmond kept the pressure on in the second half, going up by as many as 25 points with a 61-36 advantage at 10:01 mark.
The Spiders had many bright spots in the victory, including solid performances from virtually every freshman on the roster. Kristina Puthoff-King notched six, Leah Johnson chipped in with four and Amber Nichols had two.
Richmond tied a season-high with 15 assists and the Spiders' bench accounted for 30 points. Richmond also recorded 31 points off Hampton mistakes.
Tonight's win was Richmond's first-ever at Hampton. The Lady Pirates lead the series at 11-6 but the Spiders have won the past three.
Notes: Richmond heads to the Central Florida Thanksgiving tournament 4-1. The Spiders are 1-0 against UCF and have never met Michigan State.
