ORLANDO, Fla. -
Richmond (4-2) couldn't overcome a slow start and fell to host Central Florida 79 - 53 Friday afternoon in the UCF Thanksgiving Classic.
The Spiders couldn't connect on a basket early, going 2-for-12 to fall behind 16-7 while the Knights shot 8-of-16. Things didn't get any easier, as Richmond fell behind 23-12 at the 8:01 mark. Richmond slashed the lead 28-21 after a 9-5 run, spurred by a Kara Powell long ball.
Central Florida countered with four straight points, but the Spiders kept it an under-10 deficit behind the play of Genevieve Okoro. But just when it looked like the Spiders might fight back to life, Central Florida closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 39-23 lead at the break.
Despite the frostiness from the floor, Richmond's freshmen came ready to play. Kristina Puthoff-King contributed five. This trio accounted for 12 of the Spiders' first 18 points.
Richmond went on a 9-4 run to start the second half and make the deficit 43-32 but would get no closer the rest of the way.
Goring pulled down a team-high 10 boards while Sam Bilney scored a season-best nine. Richmond's bench outscored the Knights, 23-20.
The Spiders conclude the UCF Thanksgiving Classic with No. 25 Michigan State at noon.
