The Latest:
A tenacious Richmond women's basketball team pushed No. 12 Georgetown to the brink but came up just short, falling 65-64 Wednesday night at McDonough Arena. The Spiders made a season-high 10 threes and Brittani Shells poured in a game-best 26 points.
Shells, the 16th leading scorer in the nation, sunk a season-high five threes (only one shy of her career-high) at Georgetown. Shells was nearly flawless from the field in the first half, scoring a head-turning 20 points and going 8-for-10 from the field.
Shells has led the Spiders in all but one game this season, and has six game-high performances.
Not to be outdone, Abby Oliver provided support with her season-high 22 points, off 6-for-13 from the field. Oliver sunk a season-best 8-of-9 tries from the charity stripe.
Richmond knocked down a season-high 10 threes, its most long-range production since Jan. 16, 2010 when it netted 10 treys against UMass.
The Spiders shot a season-high 56 percent from the field all the while netting a season-best 67 percent of long range shots.
Shells, Oliver and Kara Powell accounted for nine of the 10 threes and each player is impressive from long distance. Powell is leading the pack at 52 percent accuracy (12-for-23) while Oliver follows at 43 percent (13-for-30) and Shells makes 42 percent (16-for-38).
The Series:
Richmond welcomes cross-town rival VCU to the Robins Center in an attempt to win its third straight in the series. The Spiders hold an overpowering advantage, 50-36 in all-time games and head coach Michael Shafer is 4-1 against the Capital City rival.
The Spiders have won 10 of the past 11 meetings, including the last two.
The Spiders relied on strong showings by Brittani Shells and Abby Oliver to propel Richmond over VCU, 66-52, in last year's meet-up in the Seigel Center. Shells recorded a double-double, the only one of her career, with an 18-point, 11 rebound performance. Oliver chipped in with 15.
The Spiders won 23 of the first 25 meetings between the two schools.
Only with William & Mary do the Spiders have more history in the all-time series in this year's 2010-11 schedule.
