TEMPE, ARIZ. - Senior Justin Harper led Richmond with 23 points and seven rebounds on Sunday afternoon as the Spiders downed Arizona State 67-61 for the Spiders sixth win in the last eight games against BCS conference teams.
Harper made 10-of-14 field goals, including 3-of-4 three-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds as Richmond improved to 2-0 against BCS conference teams this season. The Spiders defeated then No. 8 ranked Purdue last Saturday in Chicago.
Richmond (7-2) shot 49 percent from the field, including 43.8 percent from three (7-of-16), while holding Arizona State to 34.5 percent shooting and 33.3 percent from three.
Richmond also dominated the paint, outscoring the Sun Devils 26-8 in the lane.
Senior Kevin Anderson scored 14 points and had four assists, while senior Dan Geriot also reached double-figures with 11 points.
Spider junior Darrius Garrett blocked a season-high six shots as he moved into ninth on Richmond's all-time career list with 82. He needs two blocks to tie Johnny Newman for eighth.
Richmond, which set the school record for blocks in a season last year, was averaging just 3.3 blocks per game before notching a season-high nine on Sunday. The Spiders also had nine steals.
After playing nine games in 24 days, the Spiders have their longest break between games so far this season, before hosting cross town rival VCU Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Farm Bureau Insurance Black & Blue Classic in the Robins Center.
