Spiders Run Past Rhody 70-46 On Pink Out Night

The Richmond women's basketball team (16-8, 5-4) dominated the Rhode Island Rams 70-46 Saturday night at the Robins Center.
Richmond took control from the first tip, going up 11-4 in the first seven minutes of play. Richmond went on to boost its lead to 19-4 at the 11:46 mark. The Spiders held Rhody without a field goal nearly seven minutes and the Spiders' stifling defense forced the Rams to turn the ball over eight times in this span.
The Rams battled out of their scoring drought to post an 8-0 run to put them within 19-12 at the 5:49 mark but the Spiders quickly responded with a 7-0 run of their own to push the lead to a comfortable 26-12 at the three minute mark. Richmond ended the break with a 34-16 advantage and forced 18 Rhody turnovers. Richmond made twice as many field goals as Rhode Island and shot 52 percent from the field.
A Danielle Bell layup put the Spiders up 40-21 at the 16:48 mark but Rhode Island chiseled the lead down to 42-29 after a 9-0 run.
From there, Richmond put the game out of reach, after a barrage of three-pointers eventually gave the Spiders a 58-39 lead with five minutes remaining. The Spiders led by as many as 27 after a lay-up by Tiffanie Couts boosted the edge to 70-43 with just under a minute to play.
The win marks Richmond's 10th in a row versus the Rams and the Spiders now own an 11-2 advantage in the series.
Richmond caused 34 Rhody turnovers--which tied a season high for a Spider opponent. (34, Fordham, 2/3/10). Richmond posted 16 steals to go along with 12 assists.
Brittani Shells led all scorers with 20 points and Abby Oliver recorded her second-straight 19-point performance, which ties a career high.
Richmond travels to St. Bonaventure for a 4:45 tip Wednesday.
