UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Richmond (0-2) held a 4-4 tie with the No. 5 Blue Devils (3-0), but Duke would score seven unanswered goals en route to a 17-9 victory Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
"It was a good game in the sense we stayed with them offensively throughout much of the game," said head coach Stephy Samaras. "Our defense just got tired at the end. We need to work on playing a full 60 minutes. Overall, I was really happy with the way we competed with a top-5 program."
Duke got its first two goals from Jillian Heinz to lead 2-0 at the 19:29 mark. Richmond's Molly Early gave the Spiders their first tally after lasering in an unassisted goal at the 15:50 mark.
Duke would counter twenty seconds later with a goal of its own, but Richmond responded with a Gabi Wiegand a minute later to cut the Blue Devil advantage to 3-2.
Duke's Sarah Bullard gave the Blue Devils a two-goal advantage after connecting on a pass from Christie Kaestner, but Richmond scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 4-all with 11 minutes remaining in the first frame.
Richmond got its third goal from Wiegand off a cross pass from Flowers and got its equalizer from an unassisted Danielle Schaevitz.
Duke responded to Richmond's run with seven unanswered goals to close the first half with an 11-4 edge.
Over the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Blue Devils outscored the Spiders 3-1 to take a 13-5 lead with 20 minutes remaining.
Schaevitz connected on another unassisted goal at the 38 minute mark to put the Spiders back to within 13-6. The Spiders scored two of the game's final three goals but it proved to not be enough.
Erica Marrocco's 22 saves in the net was a career-high and only three saves shy of setting a single-game record.
Wiegand, Schaevitz and Sam Stevenson led the Spiders with two goals apiece. Flowers and Kara Moschetti each recorded two assists.
Richmond hosts 2009 NCAA Runner-up and fourth-ranked North Carolina Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
