CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
The Richmond women's lacrosse team was downed by No. 12 Virginia 17-8 Wednesday evening at U-Hall Field in Charlottesville, Va. Sophomore Mary Flowers tallied a team-high four goals.
"We battled the entire game," said head coach Stephy Samaras. "UVA shot very well and played according to their game plan. We played tough and were able to control the ball better on the offensive end. We look forward to refocusing for our next game."
Virginia got off to a hot start, scoring the games first five goals in the first six minutes of play. In the ensuing two minutes of play, Richmond responded with back-to-back unassisted goals from freshman Gabi Wiegand and Flowers to cut the lead to 5-2 at the 19:28 mark.
The Cavaliers answered back with two goals of their own to push their lead to 7-2 with 13 minutes remaining in the first frame. Danielle Schaevitz gave the Spiders' another tally with an unassisted score three minutes later.
After another UVA goal, Richmond's Colleen Werther scored her first goal of the season off a Kara Moschetti feed to cut the Cavalier lead to 8-4 with three minutes remaining.
Virginia closed the half with two more goals to lead 10-4 at the break. The Cavaliers replicated their hot start to the game with another five goals to open the last frame of play.
Richmond then went on a scoring explosion of its own, recording four consecutive goals--three of which were tallied by Flowers--to cut the Cavalier deficit to 15-8. Virginia gave itself breathing room with two more goals to close the game.
Flowers has led Richmond scoring the past two games, tallying seven goals in this span. Flowers already has a team-high nine goals on the season. Richmond travels to American next Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. game.
