WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Thanks to Abby Oliver's career-best 27 points, Richmond completed its second-straight home and home sweep over rival GW with a 78-54 win at the Charles E. Smith Center Friday afternoon.
Both teams struggled from the field early, with both sides at 0-for-10 shooting at the first media. The Spiders' stingy defense forced seven Colonial turnovers in this span.
Richmond soon found its rhythm after Kara Powell connected on two straight three-pointers to put the Spiders ahead 6-0 at the 14:23 mark. GW did not get its first basket until the 13 minute mark after a jumper by Megan Nipe.
Oliver went on to score Richmond's next eight points to put the Spiders ahead at 14-4 with 12:26 left. GW answered with a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 16-14 with 10 minutes remaining. Richmond pushed its lead back to double-digits after a 12-4 run of its own to go ahead 28-18 with just under seven minutes to play.
The Spiders closed the half with another 12-0 run to take a 41-27 advantage into halftime. The 41 first-half points was the Spiders' most since Jan. 16th against UMass.
Richmond also had 12 assists at the break to go along with 50 percent accuracy from both the field (16-for-32) and long range (6-for-12).
The Spiders went up by 50-31 after Powell sunk another three-pointer, but the Colonials would answer back with a 13-6 run to cut the Richmond lead to 56-44 at the 11:55 mark.
Richmond put the game out of reach with another 12-2 scoring spree to take control at 64-45 with just under 10 minutes to play.
Oliver led three Spiders with a career-best 27 points. Oliver went a career-high 9-for-14 from the field and 4-for-6 from long range. Oliver also went a spotless 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.
Shells followed with 17 points, from 8-for-14 shooting, while Katie Holzer contributed with a team-high five assists.
The Spiders went 9-for-21 from long range, just one three shy of tying a season-best. Richmond recorded 21 assists in the contest along with 11 steals.
The Spiders end their regular season at Saint Louis. Tip is slated for 1:00 p.m. on CBS College Sports.
