Sporting News Names Mooney A-10 Coach Of Year; Anderson And Gonzalvez Named All-Conference

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond head coach Chris Mooney was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year by Sporting News, while junior Kevin Anderson was named First-Team All-Atlantic 10 and senior guard David Gonzalvez was named Second-Team All-Conference.
Mooney, who has also been named one of 15 finalists for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award, has led the Spiders to a 24-7 overall record and 13-3 mark in Atlantic 10 play, a 78-76 double-overtime loss at Xavier from winning the league's regular-season crown.
Richmond, which set a school-record for regular-season wins, was ranked for the first time in 24 years and the second time in 52 years.
Anderson was also named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and First-Team All-Atlantic 10 by the conference's coaches, while Gonzalvez was named Second Team All-Atlantic by the coaches.
Richmond's guard combo of Anderson and Gonzalvez, known as one of the best in the nation, has combined for 3,141 career points, with Gonzalvez third among active Atlantic 10 players in scoring and Anderson fourth.
Anderson, a 6-foot-0 guard from Atlanta, leads the Spiders and is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 17.8 points per game. A second-team selection a year ago, Anderson, has scored 20 or more points 12 times this season and reached double-figures in 28 of 31 games. He scored a career-high 31 points against Wake Forest and was named the MVP of the South Padre Island Invitational.
Gonzalvez is second on the Spiders and 14th in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 14.3 points per game and leads the team and is eighth in the A-10 in three-pointers made (2.1 pg) and ranks seventh in the Atlantic 10 in three-point percentage (.367). He is tied for third in the league in steals (1.8) and is ninth in the league in minutes played (34.0).
The Spiders are the third seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and had a first round bye. Richmond plays in the quarterfinals on Friday night at 9 p.m. at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
