RICHMOND TIMES DISPATCH (John O'Connor) - Three consecutive trips to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs set up a tough act to follow for new Spiders coach Latrell Scott. Also, factor in that the Richmond native is the youngest coach in Division I (34), and has no experience as a coordinator.
Today, Scott's Spiders begin spring football at Robins Stadium. Yesterday, he discussed what UR wants to accomplish, and his new role.
Q: You've been a wide-receivers coach throughout your career. As a head coach, what will you do at practice?
A: I'm going to try to be as helpful as I can, help guys manage situations. Offensively, I know more about what we're doing, so I'll probably spend more time with the defense. I'll just have fun spending time with new positions and learning different things, different ways guys teach.

Five practices, including the first workout and four scrimmages, will be open to the public. Those open work-outs are March 17 (Robins Stadium, 4 p.m.), March 24 (Robins Stadium, 4 p.m.), March 27 (UR Stadium, 11:30 a.m.), April 3 (UR Stadium, 11:30 a.m.) and April 9 (UR Stadium, 4:30 p.m.).

A: We don't have a starting quarterback. We have two guys who are battling for the position [Corp and sophomore John Laub]. And we've got to give [sophomore] Nick Hicks a shot as well. Going into Day 1, John will get the first snap in practice, and Aaron will get snaps with the [first team] too. And we'll see where Nick fits into the race.
Q: Will Richmond pass more than run because you have more experience at wide receiver with Kevin Grayson, Donte Boston than you do at running back after the loss of senior tailback Justin Forte (1,057 rushing yards last season)?
A: I think that's the beautiful thing about spring practice. We've got to find out what we can and can't do. Obviously, we've got three accomplished skill guys, but we've got some good tailbacks, and we've got some good offensive linemen, and we've got some good quarterbacks. We've got to figure out what the strength of the team is. I would imagine that sometimes, you may have to throw it 40 times to win, but hopefully in some games, we can run it 40 times and win.
Q: Do you have two or three specific areas that you'd like to address during these 14 spring practices?
A: I think first and foremost, special teams. We've got to make sure we're sound special-teams-wise. We've got to find out what our offensive line [which lost four starters] can and can't do, what those young guys are capable of. Defensively, we've got to make sure those guys are running around, because if we can stop people from scoring, it will take a little pressure off of our younger offense.
Q: What are your thoughts on moving into Robins Stadium, on campus?
A: It's beautiful. A home game now is truly a home game. This stadium gives people the opportunity to come to the University of Richmond to watch a football game. If we can get this place as full as the Robins Center was [for a few late-season basketball games], it will be a pretty good environment."
Notes
UR's spring game will start at 2:30 p.m. April 10. It will be played at UR Stadium, the off-campus facility where the Spiders played home games from 1929-2009. At tables there, information will be available regarding tickets for 2010 games at on-campus Robins Stadium, parking and traffic flow. Robins Stadium is on schedule to be completed in the summer.
