PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -
Danielle Schaevitz led nine Spiders with a career-best four goals en route to Richmond's 15-7 win over Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.
The win improved the Spiders to 7-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play and kept Richmond in first place with UMass.
"Defense was the key," said head coach Stephy Samaras. "We were able to hold off a very patient Saint Joseph's attack and come up with some great caused turnovers."
The Hawks got on the board first, but Richmond responded with four unanswered tallies to go up 4-1 with 16 minutes remaining. Three of the four goals were unassisted, with Mary Flowers striking first, then Anne Ryan followed by Schaevitz. Shannon Cudahy added the other score off an Anne Ryan pass.
Saint Joe's tried to chip away at the lead with another goal, but again Richmond returned the favor with two more free position scores.
The Hawks' Jenna Martino would score with 17 seconds left in the first half, but Richmond's Gabi Wiegand scored off a Sam Stevenson pass at the buzzer to give the Spiders a 7-3 lead at the break.
The second half was all Richmond as the Spiders outscored the Hawks 8-4 in the last frame. Richmond recorded a game-best 24 shots, including outshooting Saint Joe's 15-8 in the second half.
Richmond had the edge in draw controls, 13-11 including a timely 9-5 advantage in the last half.
Flowers followed Schaevitz with another hat trick performance, while Tara Coyle added a career-best two goals. Six other Spiders added one goal apiece. Four Spiders recorded assists.
The Spiders continue conference road play at Duquesne next Friday at 4:00 p.m.
