OLEAN, N.Y. -
Richmond (9-8, 6-1) cruised past St. Bonaventure 18-9 Sunday afternoon and became the 2010 A-10 regular season champs with a UMass loss earlier in the day. The Spiders will enter next week's A-10 Tournament as the top seed and face fourth-seeded Temple Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Rooney Field at Duquesne.
Richmond secured its fourth regular season title in five years with the win Sunday. UMass owned the tiebreaker but fell to La Salle 10-9 earlier in the day.
"What a great way to end the regular season," said head coach Stephy Samaras. "The team controlled the pace of the game and looked solid on both ends of the field."
The Bonnies had a 2-1 advantage before Richmond scored four unanswered to go up 5-2 with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Julianne Nicola started the scoring onslaught with an unassisted tally, and then freshman Gabi Wiegand notched three consecutive goals to put the lead back in the Spiders' favor.
St. Bonaventure would get three more goals to the Spiders' two to trail 7-5 going into the half.
Richmond wasted little time shifting the momentum in its favor with three straight scores to open the second half. Flowers accounted for one goal, while Sam Tajirian and Weigand added the others.
The Bonnie would inch to an 11-7 deficit but would get no closer.
Mary Flowers ended the game with a career-high six goals. Wiegand added four and Danielle Schaevitz contributed a hat trick.
Wiegand rounded out her stellar performance with a team-high three assists. The Spiders recorded a game-high 34 shots and 29 ground balls. Richmond also scored a season-high 18 goals.
The Spiders committed a season-low eight turnovers and Erica Marrocco collected a game-high nine saves.
