PITTSBURGH, Pa. -
Richmond led UMass 5-2 early, but the Minutewomen would rally to edge the Spiders, 12-10 in the 2010 Atlantic 10 Tournament final at Rooney Field on Duquesne's campus. Gabi Wiegand paced Richmond with three goals apiece.
"We played great defensively against a very patient UMass attack," said head coach Stephy Samaras. "Offensively, we showed our youth but battled the entire game. Possession was key and we rushed too much on attack. We couldn't convert some of our caused turnovers into goals."
After UMass took a 2-1 lead, Richmond upped its offensive attack to score four unanswered to push the advantage to 5-2. Freshman Gabi Wiegand jumpstarted the scoring onslaught with a free position. Mary Flowers followed off a Kara Moschetti pass and then Ryan scored from a Flowers dish. Danielle Schaevitz closed the scoring spree with an unassisted laser.
But soon after, Mother Nature would intervene and delay the game for nearly 50 minutes due to inclement weather in the area.
The delay in game deflated what was a huge momentum shift in Richmond's favor. UMass came out from the extended break firing on all cylinders, scoring the game's next three goals to put the score at 5-all with 10 minutes left in the first half.
Ryan's unassisted tally would give the Spiders a 6-5 advantage but UMass answered the call a minute later to knot the score at 6-6.
UMass opened the second half with a quick score, but Wiegand responded with one of her own to again knot the score at 7-7 with 26:54 to play.
UMass would look to its go-to player in Jackie Lyons who did not disappoint with an unassisted tally to put the advantage to a 8-7 Minutewomen favor.
Kara Moschetti would tie the game, 9-9 after her crafty free-position sailed past the Minutewomen keeper.
Lyons answered with a free position a minute later.
Ryan scored unassisted with 16:29 left to give the game its seventh tie.
UMass responded a couple minutes later with a Dayna Defliese score to retake the lead at 10-9.
UMass scored an insurance goal from Merritt Cosgrove to take its largest lead of the game at 11-9. The Spiders would not recover.
Wiegand scored with 2:25 left to cut the deficit to 12-10 but it would not be enough. Richmond's last hope came with around 1:30 left as Flowers lasered an open look into the goal, only to have the ball hit the crossbar.
Senior goalkeeper Erica Marrocco recorded seven saves in the net and ended her decorated career at Richmond with 482 keeps.
Flowers ended the season with 55 goals on the season, which ranks third for goals in a single-season.
Flowers, Wiegand and Ryan were selected to the All-Tournament team.
