CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
The Richmond women's tennis team fell to No. 2 North Carolina 4-0 Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C.
"I was proud of our fight today against one of the best teams in the
country," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "Sydney Grant finished the season strong up one set in her match and Matuszczyk and Smyth both lost close first sets.
UNC showed why they were ranked #1 earlier this year. They are
experienced, with three seniors, and talented. They will be tough to beat. "
The Tarheels claimed the first point with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, followed by an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.
North Carolina swept the remaining points in singles action, with wins at No. 6, 2 and 5.
Richmond finished its 2010 season after securing its second-straight and program seventh A-10 crown. Today's match marked Richmond's ninth trip to the NCAA Championships.
Senior Erin Clark finished her decorated career at Richmond as a two-time A-10 Student Athlete of the Year and three-time All Conference first team selection. Junior Kelly Tidwell joined Clark with first team honors, while freshman Sydney Grant earned second team accolades.
