KINGSTON, R.I. - Cameron Brown's two-run homer in the sixth inning tied the game at 3-3, but Rhode Island scored three times over the next two innings and defeated Richmond, 6-4, Saturday in the middle game of an Atlantic 10 series in Kingston, R.I.
Bill Barber and Victor Croglio each had two of the Spiders' 10 hits, while Adam McConnell's RBI got Richmond (22-26, 8-15) on the board in the fifth inning after Rhode Island (26-21, 15-8) had seized an early 3-0 advantage.
The Spiders staged a two-out rally in the ninth, as Croglio singled, swiped second and scored on Robby Masser's double down the left-field line. But closer Gardner Leaver fanned three over the final two innings to record his ninth save.
Richmond squandered prime scoring chances in both the fifth and eighth innings - loading the bases with no outs and scoring just one in the fifth, and coming up empty after putting the first two on in the eighth with back-to-back singles from Derek Boliek and Mike Mergenthaler.
URI starter Ken Graveline fanned five and walked just one over seven innings, improving to 6-2 this season. Leaver, though, emerged after the Spider singles to lead off the eighth and got a strikeout and rolled a double-play ball to keep Graveline in line for win.
Billy Falasco was on the hook for the loss (1-2) after pitching three innings in relief of starter Anthony Cafagna.
The series concludes Sunday at Bill Beck Field in Kingston. First pitch is set for noon in Richmond's final road game of the season.
