Duquesne Rallies For 6-5 Sunday Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Junior Matt Trent gave the Spiders eight strong innings but was denied his sixth consecutive victory as Duquesne rallied with the game's final four runs and walked off with a 6-5 win Sunday in Pittsburgh to take the weekend series. Sophomore Chris Cowell launched his team-leading 16th home run of the season for the Spiders.
Cowell's homer - a two-run shot to left field - capped a five-run third inning that gave Richmond a 5-2 advantage and answered Duquesne's two-run first runs.
The Dukes carved into the deficit with two more runs in the fifth inning, but Trent cruised through the sixth and seventh easily and was an out away from getting through the eighth before Richmond's third error of the day allowed the tying run to score.
Anthony DeFabio led off the eighth with a walk, but was erased on a fielders' choice ground ball from Joe Lombardo. Following a strikeout, Chris Happ singled and a throw from right field trying to gun Lombardo at third got away, allowing him to score as the tying run.
DeFabio factored into the ninth as well the third baseman ripped the game-winning, walk-off single down the left field line to score Mark Tracy as Duquesne improved to 12-37 overall and 7-14 in A-10 play. Richmond slipped to 22-24, 8-13.
Billy Barber pitched the ninth and was tagged the loss (3-3), while Johnny Elms no-hit the Spiders over the final three innings and improved to 1-2.
Trent fanned 11 and scattered seven hits over his eight innings of work - just two of his five runs allowed were earned.
Richmond is back in action Tuesday night at VMI. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
