UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The Richmond women's lacrosse team opens its 2011 schedule with defending champion Maryland at Robins Stadium Feb. 13 at noon. The Spiders continue their competitive non-conference schedule with six NCAA Tournament teams.
"We are so excited to open the season hosting the NCAA champion, University of Maryland, at home in Robins Stadium," said head coach Stephy Samaras. The 2011 season will be another heart racing, fun packed year with seven top-20 opponents and a competitive A-10 schedule."
After hosting Maryland, the Spiders travel to North Carolina for two key match-ups with NCAA quarterfinalists North Carolina and Duke. Richmond then returns home to host in-state rival Virginia Feb. 23 at 5:00 p.m.
The Spiders will host nine games in the $25 million Robins Stadium, and visit eight schools on the road. Richmond's A-10 home schedule includes Duquesne, St. Bonaventure and Saint Joe's. The Spiders travel to La Salle, Temple, UMass and GW.
Richmond loses veteran leadership in Erica Marrocco and Alexis Brennan, but returns Midfielder of the Year Gabi Wiegand and Kara Moschetti.
Flowers' sophomore campaign proved to be a memorable one as she ranked third on Richmond's single-season scoring list with 55 tallies. The Virginia Beach native also led the Spiders in points (65), ground balls (68), draw controls (59) and caused turnovers (39).
Flowers received help from true freshman Gabi Wiegand 49 goals and 13 assists. Wiegand garnered All Conference second team and All Rookie accolades. Eulitt will return to spearhead the Spider defense.
Richmond adds eight newcomers to last year's A-10 regular season champion lineup.
