The Richmond Football team scrimmaged for the first time during the 2010 Training Camp, and the Spider defense gave the offense all it could handle on a sunny and warm Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
Stay tuned as SpiderTV will follow with highlights and interviews.
A good crowd of approximately 200 turned out for the open scrimmage, with seats in the shade below the luxury suites being the popular spot. The scrimmage lasted about two hours.
The defense came up with four turnovers - interceptions by redshirt freshman LB Marcus Snipes and leaped over his head to make the play.
Sophomore K Wil Kamin made good on three of his four field goal attempts, connecting on his final three kicks from distances of 35, 31 and 30 yards. He pushed a 37-yarder wide right on the second-team offense's first series.
A sack by senior DL Martin Parker on second down of QB Eric McBride tipped a John Laub pass and McMillan swooped in for the interception.
Junior RB Garrett Wilkins turned in the longest rush of the day - a 30-yard sprint down the right side of the field. Through the air, Laub and TE Kevin Finney hooked up for a 30-yard TD pass - Saturday's only passing scoring.
Parker, McBride and senior S Max Prokell collected three of Richmond's sacks. Prokell also knocked away two passes.
Richmond's other scoring plays were one-yard TD runs from senior RB Tyler Kirchoff and redshirt freshman RB Jovan Smith. Kirchoff also converted a pair of fourth-and-one plays with runs of five and three yards, respectively.
During the goal-line series, redshirt freshman DL Kerry Wynn flashed some speed by closing quickly on FB Kendall Gaskins for a four-yard loss.
Saturday's scrimmage was the first live action with referees for the Spiders in Training Camp. Following the scrimmage, the officiating crew discussed specific plays and rule changes with the team.
Saturday marked the 12th practice of Training Camp and Sunday is the team's first off-day. The Spiders are back to the practice field Monday morning at 8:15 a.m.
