Richmond Spiders Training Camp rolled on Friday afternoon with the second day of the team's acclamation period. It was a few degrees cooler than Thursday's 100-degree heat on the Robins Stadium turf, but no thunderstorms interrupted practice.
Early in camp, it's all about making strides from the day before. The Spiders accomplished that Friday, and head coach Latrell Scott left the practice field with a positive tone.
"The thing I like to see is that we're not making the same mistakes that we made yesterday," said Scott. "Our guys are still bringing great energy to the field, and we're still getting adjusted to the speed of the game."
Senior DL Casey Cooley turned in the Day Two highlight, busting through the line and swatting away a field-goal attempt.
"It was a great play," said Scott. "But it's a positive all around. I like to see that our special teams are making those plays. And on the other side of the ball, we haven't made too many mistakes with the kicking operation."
Both sophomore Andrew Howard, sophomore Wil Kamin seems poised to assume that role in 2010.
Redshirt freshman RB Tyler Kirchoff and junior Chris Hurlburt are taking a majority of the snaps at fullback.
"It'll be running-back-by-committee for now," said Scott. "But we have some options back there and we'll see how it plays out."
The Spiders are back on the practice field Saturday at 3 p.m.
