2010 Training Camp: Day 3 News And Notes

The third practice of 2010 Training Camp is in the books, a workout that first-year head coach Latrell Scott referred to afterward as the team's most-complete session thus far.
Big plays highlighted the day as Preseason All-CAA Football pick senior LB Eric McBride returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown and sophomore fullback Chris Hurlburt broke loose down the sideline for a 70-yard touchdown reception.
"Explosive plays are going to help us win football games," said Scott. "And if we can combine that with big plays on special teams, we've got a chance to win ball games."
Both quarterbacks - sophomore John Laub and junior Aaron Corp - continue to battle back and forth early in camp. Laub threw the touchdown pass to Hurlburt, while Corp made big plays with his feet to keep the offense moving.
"Neither guy is backing down and that's all I can ask for," said Scott.
The offensive line is in a much better state than it was during Spring drills, with juniors Kevin Westervelt (6-6, 290) back from injuries and the addition of Rutgers transfer junior Richard Muldrow (6-9, 300).
Redshirt freshman Mark Speir (6-6, 280) took virtually every snap in the spring, and Preseason All-CAA Football selection C Drew Lachenmayer is the only returning starter from last year's line.
"The starting line is in very good shape," said Scott. "But if there's one area of concern right now is finding a back-up center."
A day after his birthday, junior DL Corey Jackson swatted away a PAT attempt - one of three blocked kicks by the Spiders on Saturday.
Richmond was in shells for the first time during Training Camp and the hitting picked up from the previous two days.
Shells will be worn again Sunday, with the first full-pads practice set for Monday at 3 p.m. Monday's practice is open to the public. Check back to RichmondSpiders.com as the location of Monday's practice has not yet been determined.
