It certainly wasn't as smooth as head coach Latrell Scott would have liked, but the full pads went on and the emotions went up Monday on Day Five of the Spiders' 2010 Training Camp.
Overall, the defense enjoyed one if its better days thus far and got two big turnovers -- interceptions from Justin Rogers -- and kept the run game in check. Rogers, a Preseason All-America pick and on the "watch list" for the 2010 Buck Buchanan Award, returned his pick for a touchdown.
"I thought the defense had a great day," said Scott. "Obviously the defense is always ahead of the offense at this stage in the game. And although we're much-improved on offense (from the Spring), we've still got a ways to go."
The blog has discussed a number of positional battles, and another to watch is at safety between senior Max Prokell, who is on the roster as a wide receiver. Richmond is looking to replace seniors Derek Hatcher and Michael Ireland from the 2009 squad.
"It's an open competition and its been a good one so far," said Scott. "We're blessed with some tremendous athletes and we're trying to find the best players to fit our needs."
With temperatures again in the upper 90s, the Spiders used their grass practice facility Monday afternoon and will practice in the early morning Tuesday at Robins Stadium.
"We made a few more mistakes on offense than we had the first five days of camp," said Scott. "Defensively we were sound and sharp, but those guys have some holes to fill as well."
