Richmond Head coach Latrell Scott:
Opening statement:
"Hats off to Coach Lembo and his team. That's a really good football team from a really good conference. But the outcome tells you something about the kids from the University of Richmond, who they are and what they're made of. Today, we fought. When we were faced with an adverse situation, they found a way to win. I'm appreciative to those guys for playing that way today."
On the dramatic first win as head coach:
"I planned it. (laughs). When two competitive teams come together, that's how those games should play out."
On how the intensity increases as game progressed:
"We're weren't very physical early. The defense wasn't flying around like we needed to. I challenged those guys and they responded."
Message to team at the end of regulation:
"I said, `Hey, guys we practiced this situation this summer.' We had overtime in a couple of our scrimmages. Ironically, Thursday's practice ended with a blocked field goal at the end of the two-minute drill. We try to practice every situation we can. On our offense, we want to protect, on defense we needed to block the kick."
How important the win was:
"We wanted to win the football game. We didn't want to be too high or too low. The main objective was to get a win. We told the players the fans didn't really care as much about the Spider Walk or the red uniforms as much as a win. The kids took it to heart and made it happen."
On how well the team responded after end of regulation:
"We talk about not panicking all the time. I told the guys if you miss a play, come back at the next snap and make a play. At the end of regulation, I didn't panic, so I didn't expect them to panic. You have adverse situations in football games, but you always get another snap."
On the atmosphere:
"It was extremely exciting. We want more. We want the crowd louder. We want more people at the Spider Walk. This is a great step for the city of Richmond, for the University of Richmond, our fans, students and alumni. We're proud of them all and I'm glad we were able to give them a win."
On the toughness of the quarterbacks:
"Against Virginia we saw what Corp could be. He came out, played well. He managed the game well. He had cramps and John [Laub] came in and made some great plays. John may be credited with two interceptions but they weren't really badly thrown balls but it was just a situation what happened, happened. I told people all along, we have two really good quarterbacks, that's why the competition took as long it did. Aaron won the job for a reason. He has a lot of ability to do a lot of things with the passing game, and with his legs. He's an athlete."
Junior QB Aaron Corp:
How the offense performed:
"For the most part, we moved the ball pretty well. Initially, we were two three and outs but after that we moved the ball pretty well."
Emotion about scoring late, then having to play in overtime:
"Coming off the field, I thought with the defense we have, all we need is a three-and-out or four-and-out. They scored on a fluke play and our job from there was to stop them. Defense did a great job of doing that. Then our job was to secure three points and get the win. Tyler made a great cut to get in the end zone and it was over."
Atmosphere:
"It was awesome. Every time you have a sellout it's going to be a good game. It was great to see the fans come out."
Elon's final drive to tie it up:
"[Scott Riddle] managed the last drive really well. We responded well [in overtime] as the defense came back out and made a big stop."
Redshirt senior LB Eric McBride:
Blocking field goal magic against Elon:
"It's the guys up front. They have the will and want to get in there. It's also the coaching techniques and game planning. Mainly, it's just the big guys up front getting a good push."
Playing in Robins Stadium as a senior:
"[Playing in Robins Stadium] was better than I imagined. The student section was so loud, they did such a good job of cheering. It's more than I'd imagine it would be. I can't wait for the rest of the home games that we have."
Change in defensive scheme after first scores:
"We're getting used to the speed of the game. They came out with three of four receivers, so they pace of the game is going to be a little faster. After we adjusted to the speed of the game, we started picking up on their routes. They ran what we practiced against and we just started to execute."
Emotion after regulation into overtime:
"We wanted to play defense [first]. It was redemption for us. We wanted to go out there and prove ourselves again. We wanted to come out and shut them out first. We wanted to get our offense on the field as quickly as possible, because we knew they would get in the end zone."
Describe hit that set up interception:
"The quarterback held [the ball] extra long and I just tried to read him. Corey Jackson did a great job being at the right place at the right time and made a play on the ball to get us up the field."
Redshirt senior RB Tyler Kirchoff:
Last play:
"It's our bread and butter play. I love to run it. I got blocked out perfectly. The pulling guard came around and made a crease for me, once I saw that opening I wanted in the end zone."
Describe feeling of scoring:
"I can't really describe it. It was an awesome feeling."
What was the plan once into overtime:
"If we're open like that, we're going to take a chance to score. It was second and short, so we might as well take a shot at it. We have full confidence in Will, no matter where we are on the field. That hadn't crossed our minds until fourth down came around."
Elon Head coach Pete Lembo:
Opening statement:
"Well I guess we're not at a shortage of entertaining games between Elon and Richmond. It was a very memorable football game. But we're disappointed to be on the short side of it. I think the kids on both sides played incredibly hard and it was a very intense game as we expected. I'm really pleased how we came out and scored early, and really set the tone. We tried to quiet the crowd down a little bit. I thought we struggled a little bit on offense in the second half. We tried to create some momentum with the fake punt but it wasn't enough to get some points on the board. Down the stretch we continued to play hard, but the penalties really hurt us. There's no excuse for that."
On Richmond's defense:
"Early on, we gave them some shifts and motions and got them unsettled. And to their credit, I think they settled down a lot in the second half and started playing a little more cohesively. They played a lot three-down, which I think helped them with the pass."
On the atmosphere at Robins Stadium:
"I thought it was great. It's neat to see so many students show up. Despite the modest size, it was very loud which made for a very good game atmosphere. I think this place is the perfect size for a school this size."
