UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Richmond and UNC-Wilmington were whistled for 24 fouls combined, but the Spiders pulled out a 2-1 victory Sunday at Ukrop Park. Freshman Lindsay Wicher.
Richmond tallied the first score of the game 25 minutes into the first half after Wicher sailed a free kick from midfield past the Seahawks keeper to put the Spiders up 1-0. The first frame was all Spiders, as the majority of the half was played deep into UNC-W territory. Richmond notched a season-best 10 first-half shots.
Wann recorded her team-leading fourth goal courtesy of a header by way of Wicher's assist off a free kick in the game's 76th minute.
After only seven first-half fouls between the two teams, the second half was a different story. The Spiders were whistled for 11 infractions, while the Seahawks committed six. The Seahawks were awarded a penalty kick off a controversial Richmond yellow card. UNC-W's Stephanie Rose buried the shot to cut the lead to 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
The Spiders staved off 11 second-half Seahawk shots to walk away with the win. Junior goalkeeper Melissa Pacheco was solid in goal, with eight saves. Richmond recorded a season-high 19 shots, with 10 different Spiders notching tries. Wann led Richmond with a team-high five shots.
Richmond returns to Ukrop Park Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. to open conference play against Saint Joe's.
