CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Sophomore Kendall Gaskins scored on a 70-yard touchdown run that tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter, and No. 6 Richmond hung around until three-consecutive touchdowns late sealed a 34-13 victory for Virginia Saturday night at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The game marked the head-coaching debut of the Spiders' Latrell Scott.
The loss snapped a 12-game road winning streak for the Spiders that ranked as the longest in the FCS and the second-longest in Division-I football behind Boise State's 13-game streak.
Sophomore Mike London his first win in Charlottesville.
The emotional season-opening match-up between Commonwealth rivals was defined by the coaching swap that occurred between the two schools in the off-season.
London, who was the Spiders head coach for the last two seasons, took the Virginia job and brought four former Richmond assistants with him. Scott was the Cavaliers' wide receivers coach in 2009, bringing five UVa assistants to Richmond.
Gaskins, an All-CAA Football pick as a freshman, carried the ball eight times for a career-best 89 yards and his seventh career rushing score. Junior Aaron Corp made his Spiders' debut at quarterback and finished 18-of-32 passing for 183 yards and an interception.
That interception was a costly play as the Spiders were driving deep in Virginia territory and trailing 28-13 with nine minutes left in the game. Corp was looking for Kevin Grayson down the near sideline, but Chase Minnifield, who may have interfered with Grayson, picked off the pass and returned it 65 yards.
Seven plays later, Payne capped the scoring with a one-yard TD plunge - his fourth TD of the night. Payne finished 114 yards on 16 carries.
Virginia's Marc Verica was 24-of-35 passing for 283 yards and a TD pass to Kris Burd that made the score 14-7 in the second quarter.
Senior linebacker Eric McBride made a game-high 12 tackles, while cornerbacks Justin Rogers and Tremayne Graham made seven each. Sophomore safety Darryl Hamilton forced a Virginia fumble on their second possession, which was recovered by Graham.
The dynamic Rogers accumulated 121 all-purpose yards in the game - rushing for eight on an end-around and collecting 113 in kick returns.
Richmond heads to into a bye week this week before coming home for the inaugural gae at Robins Stadium Sept. 18 versus No. 7 Elon. The Spiders announced Saturday morning that the Elon was officially a sell-out.
