UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - Spiders' sophomore Chris York returned to Richmond on Monday evening following his performance at the IAAF World Mountain Running Championship in Kamnik, Slovenia. York came in 37th place with a time of 51:57.
The U.S. Junior men placed ninth out of 19 teams and finished within one and a half minutes of each other. Chase Caulkins led the team, finishing 27th (51:09), followed by Cody Wells who finished 32nd (51:37), Chris York, and Paul Peterson who finished 41st (52:40).
"Wow.... what an experience," said York. "37th place overall. Solid run... wish I could have another go at it now that I know how it is run. Got behind so many people that it was like running through an obstacle course of people half the time. Gained a lot of respect for mountain runners - these guys are tough and mean."
"This was a great opportunity for Chris," said head coach Steve Taylor. "To represent the USA at the World Championships is a tremendous accomplishment and I'm sure he will value the experience learning what it takes to continue to compete at the highest level of the sport. There is no question athletes looking at the University of Richmond will achieve the ultimate success as part of our program. Chris proves that, and we are happy to see his progress and growth as a student-athlete here at Richmond."
The Junior men's race was won by Eritrea's Yossief T. Andemichael with a time of 42:30. Turkish runner, Ridvan Bozurt, came in second-place with a time of 46:00, while third-place went to Jente Joly from Belgium (46:29).
Overall, Turkey came in first, followed by Germany in second and Italy in third.
