UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - Eleven different Spiders scored, led by 20 points from Abby Oliver and the Richmond women's basketball team rolled past Massachusetts 89-63 Wednesday at the Robins Center.
Richmond opened the game on a 13-0 run in the first three minutes, stretched the lead to 36 at the half (59-23) and expanded the margin to as much as 47 in the second half in cruising to its 11th victory of the season (11-5) and improving to 2-0 in the Atlantic 10.
The game was nationally-televised on CBS College Sports.
Oliver led Richmond's balanced attacked as her 20 points made her one of four Spiders in double figures. The junior guard drained all four of her three-point tries and posted a 20-point night for the third time this season.
Atlantic 10 leading scorer, senior guard Brittani Shells, chipped in 13 points and seven boards, junior Samantha Bilney scored 12 and freshman Becca Wann came off the bench to score a career-high 11.
Richmond combined its offensive efficiency with a stifling defensive effort against one of the nation's best three-point shooting teams to post the Spiders' highest scoring output in a win since dropping 101 points on Howard on Dec. 15, 2004.
Playing at home for the first time in over a month, the Spiders shot a sizzling 48 percent from the field (35-of-73), drained half their three-point attempts and turned 24 UMass turnovers into 43 points.
The Minutewomen (5-12, 1-1), who came in shooting nearly 40 percent from downtown, were limited to 0-for-6 in the first half and just five-for-16 in the game. Jasmine Watson's 15 points and 11 rebounds led the visitors.
Richmond, which has won two straight and seven of its last eight, is back in action Sunday for a noon tipoff at Rhode Island.
