PITTSBURGH, Pa. -
In what could be categorized as one of the most memorable comebacks in program history, the first-place Spiders (13-5, 4-0) overcame a 21-point deficit to stun previously unbeaten Duquesne (15-3, 2-1), 72-58, Wednesday evening at the Palumbo Center.
Richmond found itself down 21 points with 5:37 left in the first half and went to the break with a 12-point deficit. After falling behind 45-30 with 18:19 remaining in the game, the scrappy, full-of-heart Spiders pulled together to stage a 19-0 run in the following six minutes of play and never looked back.
What To Know:
Richmond snapped Duquesne's seven-game win streak and handed the Dukes their first loss since Dec. 19.
The 21-point deficit was Richmond's largest since it erased an 18-point deficit against Dayton in the 2009 A-10 Tournament.
After shooting 9-for-29 (31%) in the first half, the Spiders shot 18-for-30 (60%) in last frame. Conversely, the Dukes shot 13-for-28 (46.4%) in the first half only to shoot 9-for-33 (27.3%) in last frame.
Richmond had 28 second-half paint points and 22 points off turnovers, while the bench accounted for 13 tallies.
It was Richmond's first win in the Palumbo Center since Feb. 11, 2007 and snapped a two-game losing skid in the series. Richmond improved to 11-4 all-time vs. the Dukes.
The Spiders outscored the Dukes 46-20 in the last frame, and held Duquesne to its lowest point total since Dec. 19.
Richmond committed a season-low 12 turnovers for the second game in a row and dished 16 assists, only two shy of tying season-high.
The Spiders forced 11 second-half turnovers, converting 14 points off the Duke mistakes.
After being held to just four points in the first half, Crystal Goring scored 16 second-half tallies and had six rebounds.
Kara Powell had a team-high six assists, moving into 10th on Richmond's all-time list.
Brittani Shells had 25 points, her 95th double-figures game and 14th game-high performance. Her seven rebounds tied a season-high.
Abby Oliver chipped in with 12 second-half points, and Becca Wann grabbed a career-best seven boards.
Shells, Oliver and Goring accounted for 37 of Richmond's 46 second-half points.
The Spiders improved to 4-0 in conference play, tying for first place with No. 7 Xavier and Temple. Richmond is 13-5 overall and has won four straight and nine of its last 10.
