UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Crystal Goring recorded her third double-double of the season but Dayton (12-7, 3-2) pulled away in the closing minutes to clip the Spiders (13-6, 4-1), 66-55, Saturday night at the Robins Center.
It was the first conference loss of the season for the Spiders and first loss at home this season. Dayton also snapped Richmond's four-game win streak.
Dayton scored the game's first six points and went up 14-8 at the 13:51 mark but both teams struggled from the field as neither made a basket for the next six minutes of play. Abby Oliver stopped the scoring drought with a jumper in the lane to slash the deficit to 14-10.
The Spiders went on a 7-3 run to even the score, 17-17 all and then went ahead 19-17 after a Shells layup. The Spiders went up 22-17 after another Shells score to push their run to 14-3. The Flyers only scores were points at the charity stripe and did not connect on a field goal for eight minutes in the first half.
After two Flyer free throws tied the game, 22-22, Dayton upped the pace and drove to the lane to draw the foul, a move it knew would pay dividends. Dayton scored 10 of its 15 unanswered from the charity stripe in this run and ended the game a staggering 29-of-31 from the line.
The Flyers held a double-digit lead until Sam Bilney buried a three to cut the halftime deficit to 34-25.
Richmond's offense exploded the opening minutes of the second half, going on a 10-0 run fueled by Goring's six points to take a 35-34 lead with 14:51 remaining. Richmond's stifling defense frustrated the Flyers, who didn't connect on a second-half field goal until the 14:01 mark after an Olivia Applewhite layup.
The game switched hands for the next three minutes until two Daughtery free-throws gave Dayton the lead, 42-41, with 10:52 left. Richmond cut the deficit to 49-47 after a Shells jumper but an ensuing Raterman layup gave Dayton a two-possession advantage.
From there, Dayton kept an arms-length advantage of six to eight points, but the Spiders cut the deficit to 56-51 at the 3:21 mark after a Bilney layup. It was the closest the Spiders would get as the following possession resulted in a response score from the Flyers.
Daughtery led the Flyers with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 11-of-11 from the line.
Goring led the Spiders with 17 points and 11 boards, her third double-double of the season, eighth of her career. Shells followed with 16 and Oliver added 10. Bilney helped out with nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Richmond continues its home slate with Charlotte Wednesday at noon as part of Kids Day.
