Charlotte Pulls Away Late To Down Richmond

Richmond held the lead with six to play, but Charlotte scored 11 unanswered to sink the Spiders, 73-62 Wednesday afternoon at the Robins Center.
The competitive contest had eight lead changes and 10 ties. Local schools in the area were present for today's game as part of Richmond's Dream Big program.
The game was quick-paced and had several lead changes in the opening minutes, and the Spiders took an 11-10 lead at the 15:10 mark but Charlotte orchestrated a 15-4 scoring spree over the ensuing seven minutes that broke the game open at 25-15 with 8:34 left in the first.
Charlotte's Jennifer Hailey, who finished the game with a career-best 26 points and 14 boards, scored the 49ers first 10 points.
Richmond responded with a 9-2 run to get to within 27-24, but the Spiders went into the break trailing 35-29. Of Charlotte's 35 first-half points, 32 occurred in the paint.
The Spiders started the second half on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 37-all with 17 minutes left. Neither team led by more than a possession the next 10 minutes of play.
Richmond looked to capitalize on some momentum as it took a 55-52 lead with 7:23 left but Charlotte reverted back to pounding the ball inside and the move paid off. The 49ers scored the next 11 points in a row and Richmond could not recover.
Charlotte recorded 52 points in the paint, and all but four points came at the foul line or in the paint.
Crystal Goring recorded her second-straight double-double, fourth of the season, eighth of her career, with 14 points and 11 boards. Abby Oliver led Richmond with 21 tallies while Shells added 15.
Richmond returns to action Saturday against Temple at 2 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
