Wann's Tally Stuns No. 21 Dayton, 1-0
10/16/2011 | Women's Soccer
The nation's sixth-leading scorer, Becca Wann, scored her 14th goal of the season en route to Richmond's 1-0 win over No. 21 Dayton.
Dayton is the second top-25 opponent the Spiders have dispatched this season, having already beaten then-No. 21 ranked William & Mary Sept. 8. It was the first time since 2002 the Spiders have beaten two ranked opponents in the same season.
Wann received a perfectly-placed service pass from Crystal Koczot, broke open in the middle of the field and soared the ball over UD keeper Katherine Boone for the game's only score in the 60th minute.
Wann leads the team and A-10 with 14 goals and ranks sixth nationally. Wann's 14 goals ranks her second for goals in a single season. (Brooke Sands scored 22 goals in 1997). Wann's 91 shots are second in a single season. (Sands had 97 in 1999).
Richmond improved to 10-4-3 overall and moved into second place in the A-10 standings with a 4-1-1 mark. The 10 victories are the program's most since 2004.
Sunday's victory was Richmond's first over Dayton since 2002, when it beat the Flyers in the A-10 Tournament. Richmond became the first opponent to hold the potent offense of the No.21-ranked Flyers scoreless this season.
The win improved Richmond to 5-0-2 at home. Melissa Pacheco had six saves.
Richmond plays at GW Oct. 22 at 3 p.m.
