10/29/2011 | Women's Soccer
An own goal scored by a Rhode Island defender propelled Richmond to a 1-0 victory Friday night at Robins Stadium.
It was the Spiders' third-straight win and 12th victory of the season. Richmond's 12 wins are the program's most since the 2002 season, the last time Richmond won the A-10 Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16.
Richmond improved to 12-4-3 overall and 6-1-1 in league action. The Spiders are undefeated at home (6-0-2) going into the regular season finale Sunday at Robins Stadium.
Liza Koch lasered the corner kick in the game's 75th minute, and the ball deflected off a Rhode Island defender past the Rams keeper for the Spiders' score.
Richmond dominated the match, outshooting Rhody 27-7 and winning the corner kicks, 6-1. Becca Wann had a game-high eight shots. Natalie LeClair, Liza Koch and Crystal Koczot all added four shots apiece. Andrea Young recorded three saves.
The Spiders square off against UMass in a pivotal game for sole possession of second place and a bye in next week's A-10 Tournament. First kick is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
