Spiders Participate in Wake Forest Invitational

The Spiders competed in the Wake Forest Invitational this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The team worked hard in doubles play as senior, Helen Cunningham and junior, Alexandra Smyth went 3-1 in Flight A Doubles. After falling to Virginia Commonwealth University's, Alex and Ana Bara, 8-5, the duo continued to win the next three matches through a walkover from Wake Forest's Kayla Duncan and Ryann Cutillo, a win over the University of Missouri's Maria Christensen and Alex Clark, 8-2, and an 8-6 victory over West Virginia University's Melis Tanik and Mary Chupa.
Freshman, Melissa Kandinata and sophomore Elizabeth Sims finished their weekend 2-2 in Flight C Doubles. The pair defeated Campbell University's Lourdes Ros and Anais Gomer, 8-0, and Angie Sekely and Miller Hales from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The Spiders fell to Eastern Tennessee State University and Marshall University, 8-6 and 8-3.
"Fall tournaments are a great barometer of our progress," says Coach Mark Wesselink. "We're not where we need to be yet, but I think everyone is now motivated to put in the work to have a strong spring season. It was a challenge competing with 3 of our players out with injuries, so our singles results were definitely affected. The biggest positive was our doubles play. Helen and Alex had a tough first round and then ran off 3 straight wins beating the #1's from Wake Forest, Missouri and West Virginia."
Fall play will continue the weekend of October 21-23rd at the Atlantic Regional Singles Championship.
