Spiders Down Hawks, Sweep Weekend Action
10/09/2011 | Women's Soccer
Richmond beat Saint Joes, 2-1, to sweep A-10 weekend action and pick up six pivotal points in the conference standings.
The Spiders edged Temple, 3-2, Friday after Becca Wann scored with two minutes left in regulation to lift Richmond over the Owls. The Spiders sit 9-4-2 overall and 3-1-0 in conference action. Richmond has nine points in the standings and is one of the top teams in the league going into next week's homestand at Robins Stadium.
"It was a really strong performance against a very good Saint Joseph's team," said head coach Peter Albright. Natalie LeClair had a great game and Kristin Lescalleet probably had her best game all year, but the performer of the game goes to Emily Dale. She had a great first goal and created many opportunites for us to score. She had a team-high seven shots and is really hitting her stride late in the season. We are really excited about the weekend after a very strong team performance."
The Spiders had the first tally after Dale scored by way of a Becca Wann pass in the game's 50th minute. Dale placed the ball into the upper left corner past the Hawk keeper.
Richmond struck again when Natalie LeClair notched a goal, again courtesy of Wann in the game's 70th minute. Wann threw the ball into an open LeClair who shot right to the left post for the insurance tally.
Saint Joe's would respond with a goal in the game's 80th minute, but Richmond would hold on to the lead.
Dale led all Spiders with seven shots, while LeClair and Wann both had three tries apiece. Richmond outshot the Hawks, 16-15, and won the corners, 3-2. Andrea Young posted another win in goal with two saves.
Richmond returns home for the first time since Sept. 11. The Spiders host Xavier Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 15 Dayton Sunday at 1 p.m.
